Just heard on the Ronan Collins show that the multi instrumentalist ‘Greg Ham’ from Australian band ‘Men at Work’ died yesterday. His Flute playing on ‘Land Down Under’ is probably his most recognizable work.
There was an action taken against the band saying that this Flute ‘lick’ was ‘copied’ from an old campfire song called … wait for it … ‘Kookaburra Sits In The Old Gum Tree’.
I read this online about it: ‘Although Ham contends that the campfire classic had no bearing on his flute melody (“I was looking for sounding that sounded Australian – that’s what came out”),
I’ve tracked down a comparison listen. See what ya think:
In my opinion ‘NO WAY!’. There, I shouted lol.
Lawsuits aside, my all time fave song from Men at Work is a song called ‘Overkill’. The guitar solo timed-delay build-up, and Greg Ham’s perfectly placed Sax break at 02:26 sends a shiver down my spine every time.
R.I.P. Greg Ham
Just had a relisten to this – still love it. I usta go see them live on Sundays in the Baggot Inn/Dublin many moons ago. Great band, great bunch of musicians.
Been chippin’ away at a new instrumental. Its actually got vocals on it. An instrumental with vocals? Well just ‘aaahs ‘ really but yeh Its called ‘In Love We Trust’. Shurrup and just play the song Daithí…
Got a search request on my Backing Track site today for Hazel O’Connor’s ‘Will You’. I’ve always loved this song. Gonna do a backing track for it next for sure. But anyways …
Its gotta be one of the best Sax Solo’s/Motifs/Pieces out there – well in ‘Pop’ world, I’m sure there’s others.
I remember a few years ago playing support to Hazel O’Connor in the Olympia Theatre in a great band I was in called ‘Papa Hobo’ – howiya lads! I also remember the hairy moment when, exactly like the scene from ‘Spinal Tap’, we all scrambled frantically to find the stage when it was time to go on lol.
And Hazel and the band did this track note perfect. I remember Hazel sitting on the front of the stage for it like she did on her Top of the Pops appearance way back in 1981. Incidently that was the year U2 released their classic first album ‘Boy’. But I digress …
So I searched out a video of that song from the bands Top of the Pops appearance, and also below it is a video with the full track on it right to the end. A trip down memory lane indeed.
Dedicate this whole page, yes the whole page – phew, to my good friend and Keyboardist, Bass Player, Guitarist, Songwriter, Singer, Music Programmer, 80s expert, Beach Towel Fanatic, and who knows what else … the multi talented and all round nice guy … Mr. Gerry Hoey.

I found a website a couple years back which intrigued me. It was full of interactive stuff like classic arcade games (for example Space Invaders) and artwork amongst some other very clever material.
Paul Neave’s digital playground of interactive tools, toys, apps and art!

I was back up on this site recently and its looking better than ever. The guy behind it in my opinion is a very clever genius (is there such a thing as a stupid genius?). He’s called ‘Paul Neave’.
Here’s an example of his work - clue: there’s a mouse in the house
Isn’t that pretty? To get the full size effect you should view it on http://neave.com/imagination/
Another fave of mine from the Neave site is Fractal Zoomer shown below:

There’s lots more up there on neave.com
There’s even a full version of that old classic ‘Tetris’ which you can play right there. Brings me back to my Gameboy days! Great fun and happy memories.
So git on over there and have a look yourself, see what you reckon. The word ‘innovative’ comes to my mind.
And thanks to Paul Neave for the inspiration!
So after working the last few weeks on my own static site, and also a few new songs and videos for it, I’m back at last working on one of my other websites called “Backing Track HQ’.
I been wanting to get back to it a while now but only just managed to get back into the swing of it today.
I made a new backing track for it called ‘Old School Rock Progression in D’ and then posted it to the blog.
I was in ‘Thin Lizzy’ mode still after one of the new tracks I wrote recently in that vein, so its a good track for any Lizzy/Guitar fans wanting to practice on that style of playing. That Phil Lynott/Thin Lizzy tribute song can be heard and seen at http://www.davidotoole.com/Black-Eagle.htm
I also posted about using backing tracks when learning guitar etc.
So I’m back on the trail. Still have a few cleanups and updates to make on a few other sites too, but gonna work on the backing tracks one a while.
Hi. Just installed this blog on my site, and the standard ‘Welcome to WordPress this is your first post” (this post which I’ve kept but updated), was dated Jan 4th 2012.
That’s the exact day I wrote a song called ‘Black Eagle’ which is my tribute song to Philip Lynott of Thin Lizzy. Jan 4th is also the date he died on in ’86!
Talk about coincidence. I’ll take it as ‘a sign’.
Here’s the song I wrote that day … more info, lyrics and insights on it available here on my static website > http://www.davidotoole.com/Black-Eagle.htm
